Waiting for Mortgage Rates to Drop? Here’s What Recent Forecasts Are Saying

One of the most common questions I hear from both buyers and sellers lately is: “Should we wait for interest rates to come down?”

It’s an understandable question. Many buyers are hoping for a significant drop in mortgage rates before jumping into the market, while many sellers are wondering whether lower rates could bring more buyers off the sidelines.

Recently, however, several major housing and mortgage industry forecasts — including projections discussed by Yahoo Finance and Fannie Mae — have suggested that mortgage rates may remain in the low-6% range for the next couple of years absent some major economic disruption. In other words, most experts are not predicting a return to the ultra-low rates we saw during the pandemic anytime soon.

What’s particularly interesting is that mortgage purchase activity has recently increased despite rates remaining relatively flat. This may be a sign that many buyers are beginning to accept that today’s rates may represent the “new normal” for the foreseeable future.

Of course, every real estate decision is personal and depends on individual financial circumstances, timing, and long-term goals. But for both buyers and sellers, these forecasts may help provide some perspective when deciding whether waiting for dramatically lower rates is the best strategy.
